What is Earth Day?

Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970, which gave a voice to an emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet.

Why Is It Important?

The fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency. The impacts of climate change have spurred a renewed interested, catalyzing global generations to take on the greatest challenge that humankind has faced.

What Can You Do?

Find official initiatives and programs to contribute to at earthday.org. For example, donate one dollar to the Canopy Project to plant a tree, or calculate your carbon footprint and make changes to reduce it. In the meanwhile, follow some of these simple ways to contribute to a greener future!

Use public transportation or bike
Carpool when you can
Pick up trash while jogging or outside
Participate in Meatless Mondays
Invest in a reusable grocery bag
Grow your own organic garden

Paint the Town (Red)

Murals are a powerful tool for storytelling. Not only do they bring color and intrigue to the urban landscape, these large-scale paintings have helped build community and raise social awareness in Oakland for years.

Going Green

Like many cities across the U.S., Oakland has a long history with environmental justice, the idea that environmental benefits and burdens should be shared fairly among all people. Over the years, the city has taken steps to become more sustainable, seeking to adopt a holistic approach toward achieving climate equity.
